The latest buzzword among Nigerians, especially the youths, is “japa.” It’s a Yoruba term that means to leave or run away, and it’s now being used to describe the act of leaving Nigeria for better opportunities abroad.

Education is seen as the most reliable way to secure visas, with many countries offering scholarships for both master’s and undergraduate programs, sometimes even leading to permanent residency. Given the ongoing social and economic challenges in Nigeria, many Nigerians are using study visas as a means to “japa.” The state of public education in Nigeria doesn’t help either, as university students have been at home for nearly five months due to ASUU strikes.

A wave of resignations is expected to hit many companies in Nigeria as academic activities resume in countries like the UK, USA, and Canada. This is because many Nigerian youths are applying to study or work abroad amid the uncertainties of the Nigerian economy and safety concerns. Despite the significant drain on Nigeria’s foreign exchange reserves, Nigerians are determined to seek greener pastures. According to Nairametrics, Nigerians spent over $28 billion on foreign education in the last decade, averaging $2.8 billion annually.

Abiodun Oyewole, a tech analyst in Nigeria, shared that he has resigned and plans to travel by the end of the month after securing a partially funded scholarship abroad. “I’ve always wanted to travel abroad and worked hard by taking various exams to qualify. The poor state of the Nigerian economy, school strikes, unemployment, and insecurity made me want to leave,” he said. “Since I don’t have family abroad to help with residency, education seemed like the safest legal way, and I’m thankful I got in,” he added.

Daniel Azumara, a tech expert and product designer, echoed similar sentiments: “I believe education is the fastest way to escape poverty. Since my first degree in 2017, I’ve been trying to get into a postgraduate program abroad for international education and exposure, and to leave Nigeria. I look forward to studying in a country where safety is prioritized, where education solves everyday problems and has a global reach, and where skills and efficiency are valued over connections.”

Similarly, Tobi Oluwafemi, who recently completed his National Youth Service Programme, is set to pursue a postgraduate program in Artificial Intelligence abroad. When asked why he didn’t choose Nigeria, he said, “The UK offers world-class degrees, and AI isn’t an accredited course here. The Nigerian education system is declining, especially with the ongoing ASUU strikes.”

While some are relocating for education, others are moving for employment opportunities and to relocate their families. Not only average Nigerians but also well-off individuals are relocating. Popular skit-maker and comedian Woli Arole recently relocated to the UK, and movie producer and comedian William Uchemba has posted videos of himself in the UK.

Theteleblog also spoke to other potential emigrants. Damian Nwosu, a Tech Analyst at a Nigerian bank, is relocating his family to Canada after securing a job as an analyst. “The situation in Nigeria isn’t improving, and the political environment and insecurity are worsening. I’m glad my children will receive a better education in Canada,” he said.

Jennifer Onyebuchi, a medical practitioner, is moving to the UK to accept a job at a new specialist center. She said, “I accepted the offer because I see myself advancing in my medical field in a place where my profession is valued. Medical practitioners in the UK are better paid than in Nigeria.”
